In response to Mr. Aman's telegram, Markham sends regrets that he will not be able to go to Manhattan that day as he is completing a manuscript for a waiting publisher. A postscript commends Mr. Aman on his "observant thumb."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
